School Update

Vocational School

Wow! October has come. In Nigeria that does not mean the weather is changing. It’s plenty warm these days, but thankfully we still have rain to cool it off! Let me share about the plans for the free Vocational School we are starting for the poorest of the poor. Things have taken longer than we hoped to organize, so school will start a little later than originally planned, but we are starting! Since our students very possibly haven’t been in school recently, we are starting with 3 half days. Get them in the door, but don’t commit them to 40-hours a week! We will expand our hours in subsequent semesters. We hired Pastor Olayemi to lead our school. He has years of experience not only as a teacher and pastor but working with youth and developing youth programs in various places. We are excited for the leadership that he will bring to the school. We are actively recruiting volunteer teachers to come out and teach a few days a week. Those who are located in Ibadan, please let us know if you or anyone you know might have interest in teaching English, Mathematics, Basic Culinary Skills, or Basic Computer Skills up to 3-hours a week in the Koleosho community. By next year, there will be many doors open for missions opportunities with the school if anyone is interested! Until the school really begins and we know all the costs, we are doing some estimating. But there are some things we know exactly what the cost is.
Bibles for each student: $4 each = 15 bibles is $60
Desks and chairs for the students: $45 each
Fan: $18
White board: $10
Office supplies: $12
Cleaning supplies: $5
Water dispenser: $80
Gas stove and gas tank: $60
Curtains: $50
Total: $340
We have purchased all of these (except the Bibles and a teacher desk/chair which I don’t have the price for at the moment) and they are ready to go.

Adopt a Student Opportunity
We estimate it will cost about $2 per student each day to feed them lunch. We want to ensure they get at least one solid meal when they are with us (3 meals a week), as some don’t know where their next meal will come from. That will total about $25 per month per student. Would you consider “adopting” a student (or two or more!) and providing them lunch for this school year? It would be a blessing to know their food is provided.

We are developing the curriculum ourselves and it’s unique from most programs. Since our young adult students are potentially quite uneducated, we are developing programs that are flexible and intuitive. They may not be as “academic” as other schools, but they will develop these students to grow in their knowledge and faith in a reasonable and realistic manner. Therefore, we aren’t spending lots of money on textbooks. Real-world applications and practice should help our students eventually be ready to build a business of their own or boldly and confidently walk into another business and request a job. Creating this curriculum will be an ongoing job as we learn more about our students, their needs, and the knowledge they bring with them.
Before October ends, we will do two more food outreaches. Usually we have gone into a community ahead of time, asked permission of the king or community leader, and they’ve provided us with those children they feel are needy. But this time, we just want to show up, park on the side of the road, and distribute bread and other goods. We are looking for some more food goods to be donated to the cause, but we also have a pile of clothes that have been donated to hand out at the events. Again, those who are local here in Ibadan, if you have clothes or food stuff to donate, or connections with those who do, please let us know! You can email us here: info@rescuethehopeless.com and we can arrange to meet.
Please be praying along with us!
For the school to shine a light for Jesus in this community, for God to pick the right students to be blessed by this educational opportunity, and for our teachers to share the love of Jesus in very tangible ways.
For the food outreaches coming up in a few weeks. Pray that we will have plenty of food donations to bless hungry tummies, and opportunities to share the gospel, even in short bursts of conversation on the side of the road.
Pray for funds to feed these students three times a week, and the funds to keep electricity and ongoing costs flowing consistently.
Thank you for your prayers and overall support. We can’t wait to share more as the school begins!
